Fire EvacuationPart of the Firebrand service offering is the provision of the most efficient and safest fire emergency evacuation plan for your specific building. It pays to have the necessary fire safety solutions in place, however if your occupants can’t get out of the building in a safe and orderly manner, chaos will ensue, and casualties are inevitable.

For most people, panic is bound to ensue when an emergency situation arises. Therefore, it is vitally important to have a plan for evacuation in case of a fire. It is also important to rehearse these fire drills so that everyone is prepared in a worst-case-scenario.  Such are required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

We strongly recommend contacting us today to discuss your Fire Safety and Fire Evacuation plan. But here are a few tips to keep in mind when planning your evacuation scenario:

  • ‘Hot spots’ – Ensure the areas that are most vulnerable to fires are noted and are important parts of the evacuation plan. Consider how fires may start in your building, why they may start, and of course where they may start. Risk Assessments play a vital role herein.
  • Who has a role to play – Part of an evacuation plan should include the team that will be in charge of the evacuation. You may need someone to raise the signal, communicate various messages, be first in charge, monitor the floors, and possibly even be in charge of fire extinguishers. Fire Fighters and Fire Marshalls should be trained and must carry the appropriate reflective attire with a whistles and torchlight if necessary.
  • Position maps with escape routes and firefighting equipment throughout the building so that they are easily visible.
  • Understand your equipment – Your building may have fire sprinklers, fire alarms, fire doors, escape ladders and other fire safety equipment but if your team do not test, understand and check this equipment periodically, the equipment may fail in the event of an emergency.
  • Practice makes perfect – It’s a good idea to practice and run fire drills at least on a bi-annual basis or sooner to ensure that all occupants in the building know exactly what to do in an emergency.
